Maybe something pointy? Not LL Pegasi — an outer layer around it spirals out in a corkscrew pattern. Are you dizzy just thinking about it?
An artist's illustration that shows what SN gy may have looked like if viewed at a close distance. A supernova is a giant space explosion, and SN gy was huge. When it was observed back in , it was brightest space explosion ever seen.
There have been other supernovas since that were considered brighter, but burned out faster, which makes this supernova one that scientists find truly dazzling! By: Bob King October 13, Catch one of the most active small bodies in the solar system during a rare superoutburst.
By: Bob King September 29, See nine unique open clusters in Cassiopeia while barely moving your telescope. If you like mixing comets with the quietude of observing in the small hours, September opens with five fuzzy vagabonds just waiting for a visit.
By: Bob King September 1, Bright Stars. Gamma Cassiopeia may lack a proper name, but the middle star of the "W"-shape constellation is worth finding on the sky. By: Daniel Johnson August 31, Jupiter is at opposition on August 19th. If we take the long view — 12 years long — we can watch Jupiter's oppositions as it passes through the zodiac constellations. By: Scott Levine August 20, If skies are clear this weekend, you'll see the full Moon. And not just any old full Moon, but the Blue Moon.
By: Diana Hannikainen August 19, High-Resolution Image of Saturn. God of the sky, father of Saturn. Seventh planet from the Sun and the third largest. It may appear as a bluish-green star. In slightly larger scopes it will look more like a disk and less like a point. An interesting thing about this planet is that unlike most of the planets, which spin on an axis nearly perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic, Uranus' axis is almost parallel to the ecliptic.
It seems tipped on its side. Uranus has at least 27 moons. The largest are named after characters in Shakespeare plays. Others are named after characters in writings by Alexander Pope. High-Resolution Image of Uranus. God of the sea. Eighth planet from the Sun and the fourth largest. It usually appears simply as a bluish-green star.
In slightly larger scopes it will look more like a disk and less like a point of light. Neptune has at least 13 moons. The biggest is named Triton. The asteroid was discovered on its way towards the Earth and was predicted to have a 2.
That in and of itself is not significant. Objects impact the Earth on a yearly basis. The size of Apophis was the major concern. Even a small chance that an asteroid the size of a small town hitting the Earth rightly caused a large commotion. It achieved the highest score ever on the Torino scale and it stayed on an elevated level for longer than any other asteroid ever has.
It was eventually studied enough to know that it would not hit the Earth in The asteroid will pass again in Scientists predict that it will not hit the Earth, but it may pass through a gravitational keyhole that could alter its orbit enough that it could impact in The chances are slight, but real. Scientists have proposed that Apophis be nudged out of its present orbit into an orbit that takes it further from the keyhole.
And such a deflection is far beyond present technology for an asteroid this large. Many things can make a celestial body interesting.
