How do etsy circles work

With this move, Etsy has hopped onto the Beacon roller coaster, and it may be too late to get off. By automatically opting in every user ever registered to the new system, Etsy is likely just one especially outraged user away from facing its own set of lawsuits and FTC investigations.

Etsy's seller base has voiced concern that the changes could violate privacy laws, but Etsy has not issued any sort of official response to the outcry. However, most account holders aren't even aware of the change in the first place, and they're not likely to change their settings without some sort of prompt. It's shameful. Photograph from SquidWhaleDesigns. We highly recommend you read his posts in the thread, as well as the posts by Ars readers who counter him.

As we mention in the post, people's purchase histories are exposed via the feedback they leave for others, or via the feedback sellers leave for them.

Feedback has always been public, but buyers were not previously searchable on Etsy. This new combination, plus Etsy's seeming disinterest in addressing its own community, is what caused numerous Ars readers to send in a tip about this issue. Rob has responded to an e-mail from me about this article.

They can't see your stuff in their activity feed, unless someone in their circle likes it. What does it mean if you're in a lot of circles? Circles aren't currently intended to be a promotional tool directly benefitting the person encircled. Translation: Your own circle does absolutely nothing in terms of promoting your own shop. When you list new items, they will not show in anyone's activity feed. New listings only register in an activity feed when someone hearts or favorites them. So why should we take the time to "encircle" others, if it won't promote our items?

Will circles affect the relevancy in searches? Good news, because rumors were running wild earlier this week. Why is your number of circles visible on so many pages? Short answer, visual consistency. Plus, it's "interesting" and "encourages participation. Do circle clicks translate to sales? I haven't seen that personally. Like I said before, I think sellers may be using circles and activity feeds, but I don't see most buyers bothering with it.

I just do not see it as realistic at all. As a seller, I don't find it all that interesting at this point. I can't imagine using it strictly as a buyer.

How do circles work as a promotional tool? Get this. Activity Feeds could definitely be seen as a way to tap into niche audiences to target your market.

How would you go about getting people to favorite your items? First, they have to find them, most likely by searching the site and getting your item in a result. If the site search can't find your item, then chances of it being favorited are fairly low. So we have to self-promote, just as we have always had to self-promote. Unless I'm missing something automagical here.

Is there a team for making Circles? Translation: Please, no. This idea is discredited by saying that nothing good could come from a group of people acting in concert to favorite each other's listings, and there is no way this kind of mass action could lead to sales and Etsy promotion.

I love the activity feed! It totally makes me feel loved. ANd I'll have to figure out the circle stuff in a moment- i juist jumped the gun to tell you how much i adore this new feature. Don't hate me for saying this, but I joined Etsy to sell my products. Not to spend time making social circles I would have joined facebook for that. Seems like a waste of effort. DinnerAtEight said 10 years ago. While I certainly appreciate others' wares, I pay Etsy fees to promote my goods, not offer yet another click-through site to other shops. Same true for Profile page. CherishedHearts said 10 years ago.

Discovered these when I logged in this morning, so was happy to have some info explaining. LOVE the activity feeds! I love it! It's so nice to see that my shop or items has been added to someone's favorites! Informative and fun! Thanks so much!

Great format too! The5thHouse said 10 years ago. Nice surprise this morning! If I decide I no longer want someone in my circle, how do I remove them? Just found the Activity Feed by accident, so came to the blog to find out more - great new feature, hurrah! Now to have a read and see what these circles are all about - sounds like fun, yay for Etsy!

Oh please Seems to me it's a great way of encouraging prospective sellers to waste time window shopping, but not so good for serious sellers. I think this is a very cool feature. Just came across it by accident. Will have to read all the details.. SuzanneMedrano said 10 years ago. ButterflyFeetShop said 10 years ago. PhotogenicGallery said 10 years ago. I also love keeping up on the shops I love! I see in the forums people constantly complaining about some of the enhancements, but seriously, I don't know how ANYONE could whine about this! LilliansGarden said 10 years ago. LatressOnTheMenjay said 10 years ago.

And come on guys GlendaTheKnitWit said 10 years ago. Just when I was getting a little down about the seemingly lack of interest from others about my shop, I saw the activity feed and saw what sellers and shoppers liked about my shop. So I still have hope. Thanks Etsy. You really want us to be successful. Found the activity feed by accident and will be exciting to add people to my circle, maybe team members, too. Thanks, Etsy technies! JustScrapsNThings said 10 years ago. Just discovered the activity feed and love it.

Off to check out circles. HarrietsHaven said 10 years ago. I really like the activity feed. It's cool to see all the various activity all in one place. I have yet to investigate the circle thing, but it looks interesting, as well. DeShawnMarie said 10 years ago. Was absolutely loving these features and was joyfully adding to my circle Why is there a limit to people we can have in our circle? TCaponePhoto said 10 years ago. It already came in handy this morning when it popped up "new items" from those I had favorited a while back.

Sometimes you get so busy you just don't get a chance to go through your list of favorite shops to see what's new and this was a perfect reminder! Thanks so much for the add! I would dearly love to have that as a hot link instead of having to scroll down and dig it out of the side bar. I would like to be able to remove myself from other people's circles.

I am a merchant, not someone's buddy. I would like it if people had to ask me if I wanted to belong to their circles. I would politely say "no thanks" to all of them. I hate all this new social networking stuff, except for Teams. I find it very unprofessional in this marketplace. MsBittyKnacks said 10 years ago. WatergirlStudio said 10 years ago. I was exploring these features earlier and I love them! In fact, I'm loving many of the changes Etsy is making, especially "Copy".

Thank you for thinking about us and making Etsy a friendlier place. ObeyMyBrain said 10 years ago. A lot of wasted space on the activity feed page. I would say it needs much smaller thumbnails so more of them will fit on the page. I don't need to see my own products splashed in my face when they get favorited. As it is even on a 24 in screen only 4 of the, what do you call them, notes? Way too few. Great new feature! I reached it in just one hour! Whenever I need to do this, on any site, I look for the options closest to the issue that have to do with billing, transaction cases, etc.

Things that absolutely need a site rep to sort out and cannot be solved via reading the help guide. Usually that is where the contact options appear soonest. I think JDCreative has pin pointed the issue. I have done lots of tests and also received some through from you guys too but it seems to be so random as to whether it works or not.

So I can only put it down to the platform and the browser being used. I've been having a similar problem all week. Customers have tried to message me, or did message me, but the messages didn't go through. I thought they might be replying to a "no reply" email link, but it's happened with 5 customers that I know of in the past 3 days.

Several of those customers also left custom details in the "add note to seller" box, but the details didn't come through on the order, either.

Perhaps an outdated browser is the culprit. Let's hope Etsy can resolve this issue quickly, because it's really hard to communicate with customers when only one side is receiving messages. Sign In Help. Learn more here. Turn on suggestions.
